Planning a ski trip can be stressful—especially when it comes to renting a car, driving on icy mountain roads, dealing with traffic, and finding parking. But Winter Park Resort in Colorado makes things much simpler with a unique option: a direct ski train from Denver.

Winter Park Resort is Colorado’s oldest continuously operating ski area and has been loved by Denver locals since 1940. Back then, a special ski train started running from downtown Denver to the resort—and that tradition continues today.

The Winter Park Express, run in partnership with Amtrak, picks you up in downtown Denver and drops you right at the base of the resort. No car rental, no traffic, no parking stress. Even better, the train is very affordable: adult fares start at just $9, and kids at $4.50.

Train Schedule

  • The Winter Park Express starts running on December 19.

  • It runs every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through January 4, 2026.

  • From January 8 to March 29, it runs Thursday through Sunday.

Travel Experience

  • The trip takes about three hours each way.

  • The train leaves Denver at 7 a.m. and returns from Winter Park at 4:33 p.m.—perfect for a full day of skiing.

  • Ski and snowboard gear can be stored onboard for free.

  • The train has huge windows with amazing mountain views, comfy seats with lots of legroom, and best of all—no middle seats.

  • There’s also a bi-level Sightseer Lounge for great views and a small café offering snacks, drinks, beer, wine, and cocktails.
