Missouri isn’t only famous for its BBQ and big landmarks — it also has a whole world hidden underground. Known as “The Cave State,” Missouri has over 7,500 recorded caves, and one of the most popular places to explore them is Meramec Caverns, just an hour from St. Louis.
In fall, this place becomes even more special. The forests around Meramec State Park turn beautiful shades of red, orange, and yellow. Visitors can enjoy nature trails, see colorful fall leaves, and pass by several caves before heading to the main attraction — Meramec Caverns, the largest cave west of the Mississippi River.
Why Meramec Caverns Is Special
Meramec Caverns is full of unique and huge rock formations, like the famous “wine table” and the “stage curtain,” the largest cave formation in the world. The cave system has seven levels and is known for its amazing natural beauty.

Today, his family still owns and runs Meramec Caverns, keeping its history alive.
