The U.S. Department of State has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Mauritius, a beautiful island in the Indian Ocean. Travelers are being advised to be extra careful because of crime concerns.

What Travelers Should Know

  • Petty crimes, such as pickpocketing, purse snatching, and theft, can occur in crowded areas, on beaches, in markets, and near ATMs.

  • More serious crimes like break-ins, harassment, assault, and even murder or rape have been reported.

  • Visitors are advised to conceal their valuables, avoid walking alone at night, and remain vigilant at all times.

  • Do not resist robbery attempts and avoid opening doors to strangers in hotels or residences.

 Safety Tips

  • Keep expensive jewelry and watches out of sight.

  • Be careful while walking or driving in the evenings.

  • Register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updates and emergency help.

 About Mauritius

  • Mauritius is a popular tourist spot for honeymooners, adventure lovers, and travelers seeking a relaxing holiday.

  • Last year, over 1.3 million tourists visited, including 15,000 Americans.

  • Visitors usually stay for around 11 nights, mostly coming from France, the UK, and Reunion Island.
