The U.S. government is warning travelers to be extra careful when visiting Indonesia, a popular beach destination in Asia. The State Department has issued a Level 2 travel advisory, which means “exercise increased caution.” The reason? Possible terrorist attacks and natural disasters.
The warning mentions that terrorists may target places like hotels, malls, nightclubs, restaurants, and religious sites—and often strike without any warning.
Some parts of Indonesia are even riskier. Central Papua and Highland Papua have been given the highest alert—Level 4: Do Not Travel. That’s because of protests, violence, and even the risk of kidnapping foreigners. U.S. government workers need special permission to enter those areas, so help for Americans in those places could be limited.
Other countries, like Canada, have also issued similar warnings for Indonesia, especially the Papua region.
