U.S Issues Level 3 Travel Warning For Popular Tourist Spot

The U.S. Department of State has raised its travel warning for Tanzania, asking Americans to “reconsider travel” to the country because of crime, terrorism, and safety concerns.

The advisory was moved from Level 2 (“exercise increased caution”) to Level 3, which is just one step below the highest Level 4 warning (“do not travel”).

According to the State Department, violent crimes such as robberies, assaults, and carjackings are common in Tanzania, and local police may not always respond quickly. The report also mentioned the risk of terrorist attacks and unpredictable demonstrations related to political or economic issues.

The warning also highlighted dangers for LGBTQIA+ travelers, noting that some people have been arrested, harassed, or targeted by police. Same-sex relationships are illegal in Tanzania, and those accused may face unfair treatment or invasive exams.

Despite these concerns, Tanzania remains a popular destination in Africa — known for its wildlife safaris, Mount Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar beaches, and scenic landscapes.

For those still planning to visit, the U.S. government advises travelers to:

  • Have a personal emergency plan (not relying on U.S. assistance).

  • Avoid protests and large gatherings.

  • Stay alert in public and tourist areas.

  • Avoid public displays of affection, especially for same-sex couples.

  • Carry copies of important documents like your passport and visa (not the originals).

  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive safety updates.

Recently, other African countries like Madagascar have also received Level 3 warnings due to unrest. Several others, including Sudan, Somalia, and Mali, remain under Level 4 “Do Not Travel” alerts.
