San Francisco International Airport (SFO) introduced its “Quiet Airport Policy” in 2020, but it’s recently gained more attention in a Reddit thread. The policy aims to reduce unnecessary noise in the airport, especially in areas like retail shops and concourses. One of the biggest changes is the removal of all gate announcements for departing flights throughout the terminal. Instead, airlines will make announcements only in the immediate boarding areas.

The goal is to reduce stress and distractions for travelers. SFO claims the changes have cut unnecessary noise by 40%, saving up to 90 minutes of announcements each day.

Many travelers have shared positive reactions. One Reddit user said, “I love the quiet airport policy at SFO. The constant announcements feel outdated with mobile apps and alerts.” Another frequent flyer called their layover “glorious,” saying people seemed calmer and less rushed.

However, some people have joked about missing the usual announcements, asking how they’ll be reminded not to leave their baggage unattended.

Along with the quiet policy, SFO has made other upgrades, like opening a new terminal (Harvey Milk Terminal 1) with new dining options and lounges, such as the Air Canada and Alaska Airlines lounges.
