The cool autumn air has arrived, and with it comes golden fall colors across Colorado. One of the best ways to enjoy the season is by taking a ride on the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway.

This is no ordinary train—it’s a cog railway, meaning it uses gears to climb steep slopes. That’s how it reaches more than 14,000 feet, making it the highest railway in the U.S. It’s also one of only two cog railways in the entire country, making this a rare adventure.

The nine-mile journey takes you through Pike National Forest, where the Aspen and Rocky Mountain maples glow in yellow and red against the green pines. Along the way, you might spot elk, deer, marmots, or even bighorn sheep.

The train passes Ruxton Creek and climbs through Engelmann Canyon before reaching the summit of Pikes Peak. At the top, you can enjoy stunning mountain views, explore the new visitor center, and even hike or bike down the 13-mile Barr Trail if you’re feeling adventurous.

This region is so breathtaking that it inspired the song “America the Beautiful.” Tickets start at $76 for adults and $67 for children.

Hop on board, breathe the crisp mountain air, and see fall like never before!
