Humans have always dreamed of living longer, and a new study suggests that where you live can play a big role.

A report by BestPlaces, in partnership with Medtronic, ranked the 100 largest U.S. cities based on factors that influence health, wellness, and longevity. These included genetics, community, social connections, access to healthcare, education, air quality, and lifestyle habits like exercise, smoking, and drinking.

The results showed that the Washington D.C. area is the best city for health and wellness in the U.S. It scored high for physical activity, low smoking and drinking rates, and strong social connections, though it ranked lower for plant-based diets.

The San Francisco Bay Area came in second for its high-quality healthcare, healthy food, and fitness culture, but its fast-paced lifestyle affected its social connections score. Bridgeport (CT), Boston, and Seattle completed the top five, proving longevity-friendly cities exist coast to coast.

The study also noted that the first person to live to 150 will likely be female, as women have historically lived longer than men. Genetics are important, but a supportive community, healthy lifestyle, and access to medical care also play a key role in living a long life.
