As a travel advisor, I love creating trips that show both the differences and similarities between countries. Central America is perfect for this, with its mix of cultures, landscapes, and history. Here are two of my favorite travel routes.
Panama – Costa Rica – Nicaragua
Panama
Start in Panama City. Explore the old town of Casco Antiguo and enjoy local food. Visit Valle de Anton, a pretty village inside a volcanic crater, then head to Boquete for coffee farms, cloud forests, and views of Volcan Baru. If you love the ocean, Panama offers luxury resorts and amazing marine life at places like Coiba Island.
Costa Rica
Travel to Costa Rica by land or a short flight. Stay at an eco-lodge in the Osa Peninsula where monkeys and colorful birds wake you up. Visit Monteverde for its misty forests, hummingbirds, and treetop dining. End in Nicoya Peninsula, one of the world’s “Blue Zones,” known for long and healthy lives.
Nicaragua
Cross into Nicaragua to see Granada’s Spanish colonial buildings. Visit Lake Nicaragua for kayaking, boating, and wildlife. For adventure, hike Mombacho Volcano for great views and jungle trails.
Belize – Guatemala
Belize
Belize is famous for its islands, but the mainland is full of history. See Mayan ruins like Caracol and Xunantunich, and explore the caves at Actun Tunichil Muknal. Learn Garifuna cooking and music traditions, or relax in luxury island resorts.
Guatemala
From Belize, travel to Tikal, a UNESCO World Heritage site with huge Mayan temples. Visit Lake Atitlán, surrounded by volcanoes and colorful villages. In San Juan La Laguna, meet traditional weavers. End in Antigua, a beautiful old city with cobblestone streets, textiles, and handmade jewelry.
