Deserts cover nearly one-third of the Earth’s land, even though we usually think more about forests and mountains. These dry lands aren’t just empty and hot—they’re full of unique wildlife, ancient cultures, and are now even being used for solar and wind energy.

Here’s a list of the top countries with the biggest desert areas in the world:

🇩🇿 Algeria – 1.5 million sq km

Algeria has the largest desert area in the world, mostly part of the Sahara Desert. Over 80% of the country is desert, with sand dunes, rocky lands, and salt flats.

🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia – 1.3 million sq km

Home to the Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter), the world’s biggest sand desert. About 95% of Saudi Arabia is desert, known for sand dunes and vast empty land.

🇱🇾 Libya – 1.2 million sq km

Almost the entire country is desert. The Libyan Desert is one of the driest places on Earth, but it also holds history with ancient rock art and cave drawings.

🇦🇺 Australia – 1 million sq km

Australia’s deserts like the Great Victoria and Simpson Desert form the famous Outback. These deserts are full of red soil, shrubs, and unique animals.

🇸🇩 Sudan – 800,000 sq km

Sudan has large desert areas like the Bayuda and Nubian Deserts. Though dry, they are close to the Nile, so some farming and living is still possible.

🇨🇳 China – 700,000 sq km

China has two huge deserts: the Gobi and Taklamakan. These are cold deserts, with rocky land instead of sand.

🇳🇪 Niger – 700,000 sq km

About two-thirds of Niger is desert, with beautiful landscapes like the Ténéré Desert, known for its sea of sand and rock formations.

🇲🇳 Mongolia – 500,000 sq km

Mongolia is home to the Gobi Desert, a cold and rocky desert that supports wild animals like snow leopards and camels.

🇺🇸 United States – 500,000 sq km

The US has several deserts like the Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan deserts. States like Arizona and Nevada have hot deserts with cacti, flatlands, and beautiful views.

🇮🇷 Iran – 300,000 sq km

Iran has dry deserts like Dasht-e Kavir and Dasht-e Lut, known for their extreme heat, salt flats, and wind-carved rocks.

These deserts may seem lifeless, but they are rich in nature, history, and renewable energy potential. From hot sands to cold rocks, deserts are a major part of our planet’s beauty.
