Planning a summer road trip? You’re not alone! According to the 2025 Travel Vacationer survey, over 75% of Americans are gearing up for a road trip this summer. But before you hit the highway, there’s something you should know — not every state is full of friendly drivers.
Louisiana Ranked No. 1 for Road Rage
Consumer Affairs released a report on May 1 revealing which U.S. states have the worst road rage. The rankings were based on data from fatal crashes, dangerous driving violations, and traffic incidents involving gun violence.
Louisiana came out on top — again. This is the second year in a row it’s been ranked the worst state for road rage. The report found that nearly 60% of fatal crashes in Louisiana were due to aggressive or careless driving. It also has the highest number of deadly crashes per 100,000 people. Plus, Louisiana has the second-highest number of traffic violations for speeding or reckless driving.
Drivers caught driving recklessly can even face up to 90 days in jail the first time and six months for repeat offenses.
Other States With High Road Rage
-
New Mexico ranked second, mainly because of its high number of traffic incidents involving gun violence — nearly four times the national average.
-
Colorado took third place, with the highest number of reckless driving or speeding violations per 100,000 people — over eight times the national average.
-
Arkansas and Montana rounded out the top five.
On the bright side, Maine was named the calmest state for driving.
So, if you’re planning a road trip, stay alert, drive safe, and keep your cool — especially if you’re driving through the top road rage states.
