When it comes to peaches, Georgia is famous as the “Peach State.” But its northern neighbor, South Carolina, actually grows three times more peaches each year! And the town of Gaffney has earned the nickname “Peach Capital of South Carolina.”
One of Gaffney’s most famous landmarks is the Peachoid Water Tower, a 135-foot-tall peach-shaped tower on Highway 85. Built in 1981, it’s a popular stop for visitors. Lacey Lemmons from Gaffney’s Visitors Center says, “If you mention Gaffney, just say, ‘We’re the big Peachoid,’ and everyone knows it.”
Gaffney also celebrates peaches every July with the South Carolina Peach Festival, a week-long summer event. Locals are proud of their fruit—Cherokee County, where Gaffney is located, used to grow more peaches than all of Georgia! Today, the town is famous for having the sweetest and juiciest peaches.
