Fall is almost here, and it’s the perfect time to plan your leaf-viewing trip. While places like New England, the Catskills, and the Great Smoky Mountains are famous for fall colors, travel experts say Michigan is another beautiful spot to see stunning autumn foliage.
Adam Duckworth, president of Travelmation, said, “My top pick for fall colors is Michigan. It has spectacular autumn scenery.” He especially recommends Mackinac Island, known for its peaceful charm, scenic trails, and views of Lake Huron. The best part — no cars are allowed, so you can explore by bike or horse carriage.
Andrew Satkowiak from The Luxury Travel Agency also loves Northern Michigan, especially Traverse City and Petoskey. He says the crowds are smaller, the air is crisp, and the mix of red, orange, and yellow leaves looks magical. You can enjoy a boat ride on Lake Michigan, sip wine or coffee by the water, or take a scenic drive for amazing views.
Sherri Campbell Fenton of Black Star Farms suggests staying at a winery to enjoy the rolling hills, orchards, and vineyards. She says it’s a great way to relax, enjoy local wines, and meet friendly locals.
For a luxurious stay, Duckworth recommends the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, famous for its old-world charm and lake views. “It’s like stepping back in time — elegant dinners, dancing, and rocking chairs by the water,” he said.
So, if you’re looking for a peaceful fall getaway filled with colorful trees, cozy inns, and beautiful lakes, Michigan is the place to be.
