Torch Lake is a beautiful and peaceful place in Michigan that many people outside the state haven’t heard about. It’s the longest inland lake in Michigan and the second largest by size. The lake is very deep, reaching up to 310 feet.
People call it the “Caribbean of the North” because of its bright turquoise color and clear water. The name “Torch Lake” comes from an old Ojibwe word meaning “place of torches,” since people once used birch torches at night to catch fish.
The lake was made by glaciers over 10,000 years ago. Its clear blue-green water comes from clean surroundings and special minerals in the lakebed. At the southern tip of the lake is the famous Torch Lake Sandbar, a shallow area with soft white sand. In summer, it becomes a popular spot for relaxing and partying on the water.
You can swim, snorkel, scuba dive, kayak, or go boating. It’s also a great place for fishing—there are lake trout, bass, pike, and more. If you like hiking, nearby trails like Glacial Hills and Grass River Natural Area are perfect for exploring.
There are small towns around the lake with local shops and places to eat, like Short’s Brewing Company in Bellaire and Dockside on Torch River. For staying overnight, you can choose from campgrounds, cabins, or cozy inns like Torch Lake Bed & Breakfast.
The best time to visit is mid-summer, when the water is warm and the lake is full of life. But since public access is limited, it’s best to come early to get parking or a boat launch spot.
