Thailand has started a year-long mourning period after the death of the Queen Mother, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, who passed away at age 93. To show respect, government buildings will fly flags at half-mast for 30 days, and officials will wear black for one year.

Tourism in Thailand will continue as normal. However, people in the country are encouraged to wear black or light, simple colors for 90 days as a sign of respect. Tourists are also asked to dress and behave politely, especially at temples, royal places, and government sites.

All attractions, transport, restaurants, and events will stay open. But entertainment events may be toned down during this period.

Some places will be temporarily closed — like the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok, which are closed until Nov. 8 for royal ceremonies. Candle-lighting events will also take place across the country.

Travel experts say Thailand is still a wonderful place to visit, and travelers do not need to cancel plans. Wat Pho and many other popular sites remain open. Visitors are simply advised to dress modestly and avoid bright colors while near ceremonies or temples.
