Texas may not be the first place you think of for fall foliage, but Lost Maples State Natural Area is famous for its stunning autumn colors. Located north of Vanderpool, Texas, the park is home to Uvalde bigtooth maples, also called canyon maples. These trees stand out in the Texas Hill Country, where most trees are junipers.
The bigtooth maples grow near rivers, streams, and shaded canyons, reaching up to 50 feet tall. In fall, their leaves turn orange, red, and yellow, creating a beautiful display. Unlike many places where fall colors peak in October, Lost Maples usually reaches its peak in mid to late November, making it perfect for a later leaf-peeping trip.
The park can get crowded on weekends, so it’s recommended to reserve a day pass online or by phone. Visitors should also be careful on trails, especially after flooding, as some areas may be wet or eroded.
Keep an eye on the Lost Maples fall foliage report starting in October to plan your visit and catch the trees at their most colorful.
