If you’re looking for one of the most beautiful drives in Texas, Pinto Canyon Road is the place to go. Starting from Marfa, this route takes you through wide plains, dramatic volcanic mountains, historic ranches, and finally to natural hot springs.

Begin in Marfa

Start your trip in the small desert town of Marfa, known for its art scene and desert charm. Stay at Hotel Paisano or Hotel Saint George, explore the Chinati Foundation, and shop for local gems before hitting the road.

Enter Pinto Canyon

From Marfa, drive south on Ranch Road 2810. After about 32 miles, the pavement ends, and the land drops into the breathtaking Pinto Canyon. Here, the scenery changes from grassy plains to steep cliffs, craggy volcanic rocks, and sweeping views stretching all the way into Mexico.

A Land of History

Pinto Canyon was formed by an ancient volcano, and its land has been shaped by both nature and people. Once home to Apache tribes, it later saw ranching families trying to survive harsh conditions. Along the road, you’ll see old adobe houses and ranching relics, telling stories of resilience and struggle.

Highlights on the Drive

  • Chinati Mountains – See towering peaks like Chinati Peak, the tallest in Presidio County.

  • Chinati Hot Springs – Relax in warm natural pools surrounded by cottonwood trees (book a cabin in advance).

  • Ruidosa Church – Visit the historic Sacred Heart church, now being restored.

  • River Road Extension – Continue your scenic drive along FM 170 by the Rio Grande for even more amazing views.

Travel Tips

  • Use a high-clearance, all-wheel-drive vehicle.

  • Download maps before entering the canyon—cell service is poor.

  • Carry extra water and avoid the road after rain or during flash flood conditions.

  • The drive from Marfa to Chinati Hot Springs takes about two hours.

Pinto Canyon Road is not just a drive—it’s an adventure through history, geology, and some of the most unforgettable scenery in Texas.
