Most people know Arizona for the Grand Canyon, but the state has many more amazing places to see. One of them is Saguaro National Park, home to the tallest cacti in the U.S.
The park is split into two parts on opposite sides of Tucson:
-
Saguaro East (Rincon Mountain District)
-
Saguaro West (Tucson Mountain District)
Both look beautiful, but Saguaro West has more of the tall, famous saguaro cacti. Saguaro East has more mountain trails for hiking.
How to Reach
The closest airport is Tucson International Airport (TUS). You can also fly to Phoenix and drive for about 1.5 hours.
When driving, enter the exact park addresses instead of relying on Google Maps.
Things to Know
You need a park pass to enter.
There are no restaurants or shops inside, so bring food and water.
The Sonoran Desert is full of life — not just saguaros but many other cacti, birds, reptiles, and even rare crested cacti. Carry tweezers or tools to remove cactus spines if needed.
Best Time to Visit
The park is open all year.
The busiest time is November to March.
The most beautiful time is April–May, when colorful cactus flowers bloom.
Avoid July because monsoon rains can cause flash floods.

If you want to camp, there are six basic campsites in the East district. You must hike in with all supplies.
