It may feel like summer just ended, but in the mountains, ski season is about to kick off. Forecasts are out, excitement is building, and lifts will soon start spinning. Some U.S. resorts are ready to open as early as next month.

In Colorado, four ski areas often race to be the first to open: Keystone, Loveland, Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin), and Wolf Creek. While snow machines help, it really depends on the cold, snowfall, and weather conditions.

This year, Keystone Resort is aiming for a mid-October opening. It’s also getting buzz for its new Kindred Resort hotel, opening in December. The luxury stay will feature ski-in/ski-out access, heated pool, ski valet, and more.

To ski at Keystone, you’ll need an Epic Pass ($1,097) or the Keystone Plus Pass ($437) with access to other mountains.

Loveland Ski Area usually opens by late October, while Arapahoe Basin is famous for having the longest ski season in Colorado. Last year, Wolf Creek surprised everyone by opening first on Oct. 22.

Here are the planned opening dates for popular ski resorts this season:

  • Keystone, Colorado – mid-October
