If you want a magical way to see fall colors in the South, the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway in Georgia is a must. Running from a historic 1905 depot in Blue Ridge, the train follows the Toccoa River, passing farms, hills, and trees glowing in autumn shades.
The classic trip is a 26-mile, four-hour round trip from Blue Ridge to the twin towns of McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee. Travelers get a two-hour break to explore – walk along river trails, enjoy small shops and cafés, or even take photos at the spot where you can stand in two states at once. There’s also a shorter two-hour Express ride, offering the same beautiful views.
Riding the train is more relaxing than driving. There are reserved seats, restrooms, and open-air cars for the best photos. Just pack a warm layer since the river gorge is cooler than the town.
Peak fall colors in the Blue Ridge Mountains are expected between Oct. 30 and Nov. 6, 2025, with Nov. 2 being the best date. For a weekend getaway, you can stay in cozy boutique inns nearby, like the Dogwood Inn or Lucille’s Mountain Top Inn & Spa in Helen, a Bavarian-inspired village that’s also fun to explore.
This train ride isn’t just about the views – it’s about slowing down, sipping cider, and enjoying the peaceful rhythm of the rails.
