The U.S. has many scenic drives, but few can match the Beartooth Highway (U.S. 212) in Montana. This 69-mile road connects the mountain town of Red Lodge with Yellowstone National Park’s Northeast Entrance. It’s often called the “Highway to the Sky” and the “Most Beautiful Roadway in America.”

The drive is full of mountain views, sharp turns, and open roads that feel like something out of the Alps. Along the way, travelers may even spot wild animals like moose, bison, and grizzly bears.

Because of heavy snow, the highway usually opens around Memorial Day and closes by mid-October. At its highest point, Beartooth Pass Summit reaches 10,947 feet above sea level. Travelers can turn back at the summit or continue through to the small towns of Cooke City and Silver Gate before entering Yellowstone.

For a bigger adventure, the Beartooth Highway can be part of Montana’s Great Wide Open road trips, which explore the state’s most stunning landscapes.

Anyone planning to drive here should always check road and weather conditions first. The Montana Department of Transportation and the National Park Service keep the road safe for travelers.
