When people think of fall colors, places like Vermont and Maine come to mind. But Minnesota’s North Shore is just as magical — and even better, it has two peak foliage seasons. First, the maple trees in the Sawtooth Mountains turn red and orange, followed by golden aspen and birch trees along Lake Superior.

The North Shore Scenic Byway stretches 154 miles from Duluth to Grand Portage, near the Canadian border. It’s so beautiful that it’s been named an All-American Road.

What to See

  • Begin in Duluth, home to a large freshwater estuary that is perfect for kayaking.

  • Visit Gooseberry Falls State Park and the Split Rock Lighthouse, one of Minnesota’s most famous landmarks.

  • Stop at Tettegouche State Park to see huge waterfalls and hike along the cliffs.

  • Pass through small towns like Lutsen, where you can ride a gondola for epic lake views.

  • End your trip in Grand Marais, a charming town with great food, art, and stunning harbor views.

Where to Stay

  • Duluth: Solglimt B&B or Fitger’s Hotel.

  • Grand Marais: The Mayhew Inn with rooftop harbor views.

  • Camping spots are also available along the route.

Where to Eat

  • Duluth: Lake Superior Brewing (don’t miss the Smashburger).

  • Two Harbors: Betty’s Pies, famous since 1956.

  • Grand Marais: The Fisherman’s Daughter for fish and chips or the Angry Trout Cafe for lakefront dining.

Best Time to Visit

The best months are September and October. Maples peak mid-September to early October, while aspens and birch along Lake Superior peak late September to mid-October.
