This holiday season, the famous Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in New York City is coming from East Greenbush, New York, near Albany. The huge 75-foot Norway spruce will travel about 130 miles and arrive on November 8.
The tree was chosen by Erik Pauze, the head gardener at Rockefeller Center, who picks the tree every year. He said he knew this one was perfect as soon as he saw it. The tree has been growing on the Russ family’s property for decades, and they are excited that it will become the world’s Christmas tree.
Once the tree reaches Manhattan, it will be decorated with 50,000 LED lights and topped with a sparkling Swarovski star made of 3 million crystals. The official lighting ceremony will be held on December 3 and shown live on NBC and Peacock, hosted by singer Reba McEntire.
Visitors this year can enjoy special experiences, like standing right under the tree for photos at Top of the Rock from Dec. 4 to Jan. 10. There will also be holiday events when the tree arrives on Nov. 8, including activities with FAO Schwarz and Peanuts to celebrate 60 years of “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”
Other fun holiday options at Rockefeller Center include ice skating, cozy chalets with stunning tree views, and even a chance to meet Santa.
The tree will stay up until mid-January. After that, it will be turned into lumber and donated to Habitat for Humanity to help build homes.
