As the sun sets over Portland’s West Hills, Mount Tabor Park feels like a peaceful forest far from the city. Walking its winding dirt paths, the only sounds are birds and rustling leaves—making it a true escape in the heart of Portland.

Mount Tabor Park, a 176-acre urban park in Portland, Oregon, became the first Urban Quiet Park in the U.S. in 2023. Its thick trees block city noise, creating a natural sanctuary for visitors.

“It’s a touchstone for nature,” says Rachel White from Friends of Mt. Tabor Park. “It’s a place to get away from noise and stress.”

Rising 636 feet, Mount Tabor is an extinct volcano. From its summit, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of downtown Portland and Mount Hood. The park is home to over 50 types of trees, including heritage sequoias and Douglas firs, and 143 bird species. Trails, historic reservoirs, and meadows give it a mini-wilderness feel, while playgrounds, sports courts, gardens, and an amphitheater provide city-friendly amenities.
