Just weeks after becoming the first-ever American-born pope on May 8, Pope Leo XIV is taking a summer vacation in southern Italy. He’ll be staying at Castel Gandolfo, a peaceful villa by Lake Albano, just outside of Rome.

Pope’s Peaceful Message

On July 6, at Saint Peter’s Square, the Pope shared,

“This afternoon, I will travel to Castel Gandolfo, where I intend to have a short period of rest. I hope everyone gets some vacation time to refresh their body and spirit.”

Vacation Plans

The Pope will stay at the villa until July 20. During his stay, he will celebrate Mass at St. Thomas of Villanova Church and lead public prayers. This church holds special meaning for him as he studied at Villanova University in Pennsylvania. In fact, after becoming Pope, he was seen wearing a Villanova hat!

A Historic Spot

Castel Gandolfo has been used by many Popes for rest.

  • Pope Francis last visited it in 2012.

  • Pope Benedict XVI went there every summer from 2005 to 2013.

The best part? You can visit the villa for just $14, and explore the beautiful Papal gardens and rooms.
