When you think of cherry blossoms, Washington, D.C. often comes to mind. However, did you know that Branch Brook Park in Newark, New Jersey, actually has more cherry trees than the nation’s capital? With over 5,300 trees—1,500 more than D.C.—Branch Brook Park is home to the country’s largest collection of cherry blossoms, featuring 18 different varieties.

Located just 12 miles from New York City, the 360-acre park is a hidden gem. This year, the park is celebrating the 49th Essex County Cherry Blossom Festival, with events running until April 30. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom, with peak bloom lasting through April 18.

The park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1867, was the first county park in the United States and is now listed on both the state and national historic registers.

Although it might not have the same fame as other cherry blossom destinations, Branch Brook Park is attracting more visitors, with over 10,000 people visiting on peak days.
