The night sky could put on a beautiful show tonight  (Aug 19) as the Northern Lights might be visible across 15 U.S. states.

Scientists say a fast solar wind and a possible coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun may cause a geomagnetic storm, creating colorful auroras in the sky.

The best chance to see them is in Alaska, but other states that may spot the lights include: Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, South Dakota, Vermont, New Hampshire, Idaho, Washington, New York, Wyoming, and Iowa.

According to NOAA, the Northern Lights are expected to peak between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. tonight into tomorrow morning, with the storm reaching Kp index 5 (minor storm level).

The Northern Lights happen when solar wind from the sun hits Earth’s magnetic field, making the sky glow in shades of green, pink, and purple.

👉 If you want to watch, find a dark, north-facing spot with little light pollution. Apps that track aurora activity can help you know the best time to look up.
