If you always carry a power bank to keep your phone charged while flying, it’s time to change your habits. Many airlines in Southeast and East Asia have started banning the use of power banks during flights.

Singapore Airlines will stop passengers from using power banks on board starting April 1, 2025. This means you can’t charge your devices using a power bank or charge the power bank itself on the flight. You can still carry your power bank in your hand luggage, but you can’t use it while flying. Their budget airline, Scoot, will also follow this rule.

Thai Airways started the same rule on March 15, 2025, citing safety reasons. EVA Air and China Airlines already began this rule on March 1, 2025.

You also cannot put power banks in your checked luggage on any airline. Power banks between 100Wh and 160Wh need airline permission, while those under 100Wh are allowed without approval. Anything over 160Wh is completely banned.

As airline rules are changing, it’s best to check the latest updates with your airline before flying. For now, Indian airlines have not changed their rules about power banks, as per India’s DGCA.
