Goa has always been home to feni, a spirit made from cashew or coconut, once found in every local taverna. Over time, tavernas started fading, but now feni is getting a fresh push with new bars, bottles, and cocktails. One such place is Quinta Cantina, a new bar in Panaji that celebrates the heritage of both feni and agave.
The Team
Quinta Cantina is the brainchild of Pankaj Balachandran, known for popular bars like Boilermaker and The Lab. This time, he teams up with entrepreneur Puru Agarrwal of Ourém Bar. Pankaj’s love for feni comes from being mentored by Hansel Vaz, the well-known promoter of Cazulo Premium Feni.
The Space
Located near Ourém creek, the bar is a cozy 35-seater with Goan-inspired interiors. From terracotta pieces to rattan cupboards and traditional crockery, the design reflects Goa’s culture. Shelves are filled with colorful jars, pickles, and traditional glass containers.
The Drinks
The menu is all about exploring feni and agave. Guests can try tasting menus with pairings like pickled mango and smoky mezcal. For those who prefer cocktails, creative drinks include:
-
Fenicillin – citrusy mix of two types of feni
-
Maracuya – coconut feni with tropical passionfruit flavors
-
Mango – raw mango and cashew feni combo
-
Peru – cashew feni with pickled guava
-
F*ck Picante – spicy jalapeño-infused drink
The Food
Chef Kartikeya Ratan, with help from Chef Ines Lobo, blends Mexican and Goan flavors. Highlights include:
-
Ros Omelette x Huevos Rancheros
-
Bardez-style fish tacos with chonak
-
Quaz and choriz totopos
-
Coconut Tres Leches dessert
The Experience
Quinta Cantina is more than just a bar—it’s a cultural experience that connects Goan heritage with Mexican influences. With great drinks, unique food, and passionate storytelling, it’s a must-visit for anyone curious about feni and agave.
