April is a great month for stargazing! The night sky will be full of exciting sights, including planets, a rare “pink micromoon,” and a meteor shower with fireballs. Keep your binoculars ready and find a dark spot to enjoy the show.
Key Dates to Watch
🔹 April 2: Crescent Moon and Jupiter
After sunset, look to the western sky to see the moon and Jupiter close together. You can watch them with binoculars until midnight.
🔹 April 5: Moon Meets Mars
The moon will be near bright orange Mars in the southwest sky. Look for them after sunset until they disappear around 4 a.m.
🔹 April 11-13: Venus, Mercury, and Saturn Before Sunrise
Wake up early to see three planets shining in the eastern sky before sunrise. Venus will be the brightest, with Mercury and Saturn appearing nearby.
🔹 April 12: Full Pink Micromoon
At 8:22 p.m. ET, a small full moon—called a micromoon—will light up the sky. It won’t actually be pink, but it’s named after the pink flowers that bloom in spring.
🔹 April 21: Mercury at Its Best
Mercury will be at its farthest point from the sun, making it easier to spot. Look for it 45 minutes before sunrise in the eastern sky.
🔹 April 22: Lyrid Meteor Shower Peak
The Lyrid meteor shower will be at its peak before dawn. You may see up to 18 shooting stars per hour, along with a few bright fireballs. Look toward the constellation Lyra for the best view.
🔹 April 25: Moon-Planet Pyramid
Before sunrise, the moon, Saturn, and Venus will form a triangle in the sky, with Mercury shining nearby.
