If you are visiting Cinque Terre in Italy this summer, get ready for beautiful views — colorful buildings, cliffs, and blue sea. But there’s one important thing you must remember: wear the right shoes!

Since 2019, Cinque Terre National Park officials have warned visitors not to wear flip-flops, strappy sandals, or any unsuitable shoes while hiking. The trails are rocky and slippery, and wearing the wrong shoes is dangerous.

If you are caught hiking in bad footwear, you could be fined up to €2,500 (about $2,800)! Authorities got strict because mountain rescue teams had to save too many people who slipped and got hurt. Officials now check hikers’ shoes at the start of trails to make sure they are wearing sturdy ones.

There are a few other new rules too. On busy days during April, May, and June, popular trails like Monterosso to Vernazza will be one-way from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.. This helps avoid big crowds and accidents on the narrow paths.

Also, if you want to hike, you must buy a Cinque Terre Trekking Card. It costs about €7.50 ($8.45) on slow days and €15 ($17) on busy days.

So, before you go: get the card, wear good shoes, and follow the trail signs. Then you’re all set to enjoy the amazing views safely!
