In recent years, the Midwest has become a popular and affordable place to retire. But with many towns to choose from, it can be hard for seniors to pick the right one.
A recent report by GOBankingRates.com named Burr Ridge, Illinois, as the most livable place to retire in the Midwest. The report looked at 50 U.S. towns with at least 10,000 people, where 33% or more are aged 65 or older, and ranked them based on livability.
While Florida dominated the top 10, Burr Ridge ranked No. 17, making it the highest-ranked town in the Midwest. The town scored 75 out of 100 for livability. About 35.8% of its 11,000 residents are retirees, and the median household income is $154,508.
Burr Ridge offers plenty of restaurants, cafes, and parks, and is just 20 miles from Chicago, giving retirees easy access to the city’s culture, food, and sports. Niche.com also ranks Burr Ridge as the 7th best place to retire in Illinois, with top scores for schools, outdoor activities, and health and fitness.
However, homes in Burr Ridge are expensive, with a median price of $826,883, around $500,000 higher than the Cook County average.
The only other Midwest town in the top 50 is Huntley, Illinois, ranked No. 19, with a livability score of 74 and a median income of $86,349.
Florida dominated the top 50 spots, followed by Arizona with eight towns on the list.
