These days, many passengers are shamed for not swapping seats on flights, often with parents or families. But if you booked and paid for your seat, you’re not wrong to keep it. Still, it can be uncomfortable to say no. Conflict expert Emily Skinner shares how to handle it:

1. Know your style
Understand how you react in conflicts. Do you stay quiet, get angry, or stay calm? Knowing this helps you manage your emotions when asked to move.

2. De-escalate politely
If someone insists, explain calmly: “I planned ahead for this seat and would like to stay here.” If they push further, call a flight attendant.

3. Not your responsibility
You don’t have to fix the situation. If they’re upset, it’s not on you—let the crew handle it.

4. If filmed, stay calm
Sometimes people record these moments. Don’t argue. Keep calm, repeat your decision, and let the flight attendant step in.

5. Respect your choice
Even if someone begs or guilt-trips, your choice matters. Their needs are valid, but so are yours. You don’t owe anyone your seat or an explanation.
