Overtourism is a growing issue, but one travel company is helping people explore beyond crowded spots. Intrepid Travel has released its “Not Hot List 2026”, featuring underrated destinations with fewer tourists but amazing experiences.
At the top is Tiwai Island in Sierra Leone, known for its rich wildlife, primates, and the Gola Forest. The island was also named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2025, making it a perfect pick for adventure lovers. Sierra Leone welcomed only about 60,000 international visitors in 2024, which makes it a peaceful escape.
In second place is Kyrgyzstan’s Tien Shan Mountain Range, called a trekker’s paradise, with routes like the Kyrgyz Nomad Trail stretching over 1,200 miles. Visitors can hike, explore high-altitude paths, and stay in traditional yurts.
Third is Mexico’s Sierra Norte, home to the Zapotec villages, now easier to reach thanks to a new highway.
Other spots on the list include Vis Island (Croatia), Gaziantep (Turkey), Arunachal Pradesh (India), Via Transilvanica (Romania), Ruta de las Flores (El Salvador), Oulu (Finland), and Great Basin National Park (USA).
The idea behind this list is to encourage travelers to explore less crowded places while also supporting local communities.
