Maui, the second-largest island in Hawaii, is home to many beautiful beaches, but Wailea Beach has been ranked the best in the state by Dr. Beach (Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman), a coastal expert who creates an annual list of America’s Best Beaches. This year, Wailea Beach came in at No. 2 overall in the U.S. and took the top spot in Hawaii.

Why Wailea Beach is special

Dr. Beach uses factors like sand quality, water temperature, views, safety, and maintenance to judge beaches. Wailea Beach impressed in many areas. The beach has white coral sand, clear calm waters, and is perfect for snorkeling when the ocean is gentle.

The beach sits between two luxury resorts—Grand Wailea and Four Seasons Resort Maui (featured in The White Lotus season one). Even though resorts are nearby, the beach remains public with access to parking, bathrooms, showers, and a scenic paved walkway.

Things to do at Wailea Beach

Visitors can enjoy boogie boarding, body surfing, swimming, or just relaxing on beach chairs. In winter months, it’s also a popular spot for whale watching. However, travelers should be careful during strong south swells, as they can create dangerous water conditions.

Other top Hawaiian beaches

If you want more options, other Hawaiian beaches that made Dr. Beach’s Top 10 include:

  • Poipu Beach, Kauai (No. 3)

  • Kaunaoa Beach, Big Island (No. 8)

  • Lanikai Beach, Oahu (No. 9)
