The National Park Service has opened a lottery for self-guided rafting trips on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park. There are 450 permits available for trips lasting 12 to 25 days. The lottery is open until Feb. 25 at noon MT, and applications can be submitted online at nps.gov.

To apply, you must be at least 18 years old and have technical whitewater experience. The Colorado River is a challenging route, so at least one person in the group must meet the park’s safety requirements.

Fees:

  • Application: $25
  • Permit (if granted): $90 per person
  • Park entry: $20 per person

These trips are different from guided rafting tours, which are available for 1-day or extended trips. Shorter 2- to 5-day trips are also available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Spring is a great time for whitewater rafting, but the Grand Canyon offers hiking, camping, and scenic drives all year round. Though millions visit the Grand Canyon, only 1% go below the rim. For a unique experience, travelers can book guided backpacking tours or “Meet the Canyon” day trips.
