Tavernier Key is a tiny community near the southern end of Key Largo, but it’s full of history, local charm, and ocean views. The town is just eight minutes to drive across, yet it offers plenty to see and do.
Chris Trentine, a local and owner of Crooked Palm Cabana, says Tavernier still keeps its small-town vibe, where neighbors help each other and the community comes together.
History of Tavernier
Originally home to the Calusa and Tequesta Indigenous people, Tavernier got its name from the Spanish in the 17th century. The town grew after the Florida East Coast Railway was completed in 1912 and the Overseas Highway in 1938. Today, you can still enjoy the historic district and mom-and-pop shops that give old Florida vibes.
