If you’re planning a beach holiday in Europe, you might want to look at Slovenia and Lithuania. According to a new report, these two countries have the cleanest coastal waters in Europe!
The European Environment Agency (EEA) checked over 22,000 water sites across the EU, Albania, and Switzerland. The goal was to see how clean the water is for swimming. These places include beaches, rivers, lakes, and swimming holes.
Slovenia and Lithuania both scored the highest for their clean coastal waters. Even though they tested fewer sites—21 in Slovenia and 16 in Lithuania—they still got top marks. That means their beach waters are super clean and safe for swimming.
In general, coastal waters in Europe were found to be cleaner than rivers and lakes. The report showed that 85% of the sites had “excellent” quality, and 96% met the basic clean water standards.
Slovenia, which has a small coastline on the Adriatic Sea, will also launch a digital nomad visa in November 2025. This visa will let remote workers live in the country for up to one year.
In Lithuania, popular beach spots include Palanga, Neringa, and Klaipeda. Fun fact: Lithuania was also named the happiest country for people under 30 in 2024!
Also, Croatia had the highest number of clean water sites tested, with 894 spots making the list.
