Airports around the world are adding new features to make travel less stressful—therapy dogs in Istanbul, meditation rooms in Newark, and flower gardens in Singapore. But outdoor spaces are still rare. That’s what makes Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu so special.
Instead of just shiny lounges and food courts, HNL offers beautiful open-air Cultural Gardens where travelers can relax before their flights. The gardens are quiet, filled with waterfalls, tropical plants, and birds—like stepping into a mini botanical garden right inside the airport.
📍 Where to find it: The gardens are in Terminal 2 near the E gates. They’re divided into three sections—Hawaiian, Chinese, and Japanese gardens, celebrating Hawaii’s multicultural heritage.
These gardens were designed in the 1960s by Richard Tongg, known as Hawaii’s “grandfather of landscape architecture.” His goal was to show how people and nature can live in harmony. Today, the gardens still bring that old Hawaii charm to travelers passing through.
