More than 4.1 million Americans reached retirement age last year, and many are thinking about where to spend their golden years. According to Bankrate’s 2025 list, New Hampshire is the best state to retire in.

The study examined factors such as affordability, safety, healthcare, taxes, entertainment, and demographics. New Hampshire ranked No. 1 overall, thanks to its strong scores in safety (1st), healthcare (5th), and taxes (6th). The state only charges a 3% tax on interest and dividends, meaning Social Security money stretches further.

Maine followed close behind in second place, topping the list for senior population and ranking high in safety and health care. However, both New Hampshire and Maine scored low on weather because of limited sunshine.

Other states in the top 5 include Wyoming (3rd), Vermont (4th), and Idaho (5th). Surprisingly, Florida—long seen as a retirement hotspot—ranked only 41st due to poor affordability, weather issues, and weaker health care. Arizona landed at No. 31.

The study shows that retirees are now considering much more than warm weather—safety, health care, and affordability matter most.
