True silence is hard to find these days. Even in remote places, we often hear planes flying above or the sound of traffic in the distance. That’s why an organization called Quiet Parks International works to find and protect truly quiet places around the world.

The first trail in the U.S. to earn the special title of a “Quiet Trail” is the Niobrara National Scenic River near Valentine, Nebraska. This peaceful 76-mile-long river flows through beautiful natural areas and is known for its calm setting. It’s a favorite spot for activities like canoeing, kayaking, and tubing.

Why It’s So Quiet

Experts studied the river’s sound for two years—both listening and using special equipment. They checked if nature sounds were louder than human-made noise. The final team decision had to be 100% sure that the area was truly quiet. The result? Niobrara passed with flying colors!

Its quietness is thanks to its unique geological features, special weather conditions, and the presence of wildlife. In fact, six major ecosystems meet here, home to around 160 different plant and animal species.

Quiet Helps Everyone

Quiet places are good not just for humans, but also for animals and the planet. As 97% of Americans live with noise pollution, places like Niobrara are becoming rare and valuable.

“We’re proud to protect a place where people can hear only the sounds of nature,” said Susan Cook from Niobrara National Scenic River.

While Niobrara is the first quiet trail in the U.S., others exist in Taiwan and Spain, and more are being checked in Finland and Hawaii.
