Newport, Rhode Island, may not seem like a top surfing spot at first, but with its sandy beaches and great waves, it’s becoming a hotspot for families with special-needs children. This rise in popularity is thanks to Gnome Surf, a nonprofit organization that offers surf therapy sessions for kids with conditions like autism, Down syndrome, and learning disabilities.

Founded in 2019 by Chris Antão, Gnome Surf has grown quickly, helping kids who struggle with traditional sports. Chris explains that when he first started, he didn’t know adaptive sports were a thing, but now, surf therapy is booming with over 200 organizations worldwide.

The magic of surf therapy is its impact on both physical and emotional health. Kids who can’t walk on land can balance on a board, which can be life-changing. Gnome Surf’s team of 50 instructors runs thousands of sessions each year and even hosts trips to places like Florida, Texas, and Costa Rica. These programs not only help the kids but also bring families together, providing them with a strong sense of community.

Chris, who is neurodivergent, says this isn’t just about surfing—it’s about belonging and feeling accepted. Gnome Surf welcomes everyone just as they are, offering a space where families can connect and share their experiences.
