robbios

Rooibos, meaning “red bush” in Afrikaans, grows only in the Cederberg Mountains of South Africa. The Rooibos Route offers a journey through farms, factories, and shops where you can experience rooibos in various forms – as tea, in milkshakes, martinis, steak sauces, and even as an exfoliant in massages.

This unique plant, known for its health benefits like supporting heart health and regulating blood sugar, has been used as medicine by the Indigenous San people for centuries. In 2022, an agreement recognized them as the official knowledge holders of rooibos, ensuring they benefit from its global popularity.

Rooibos has also earned “protected designation of origin” status, meaning only South Africa can produce true rooibos tea. Indigenous farmers in Wupperthal continue to harvest the plant by hand, preserving a rich cultural tradition.
