If you love Italian food, here’s some great news: UNESCO has officially recognized Italian cuisine as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.” This means Italian cooking is now considered an important cultural treasure worth protecting.
The announcement was made on December 10 in Delhi.
Why UNESCO Chose Italian Cuisine
Instead of honoring one specific dish, UNESCO recognized all of Italian cooking.
They focused on things like:
-
Handmade, traditional cooking techniques
-
The love and respect Italians have for fresh ingredients
-
Eating together as a family
-
The emotional bond Italians share with food
UNESCO said Italian food is special because it’s not just about taste—
It’s about connection, tradition, and togetherness.
How It Happened
Maddalena Fossati, Editor-in-Chief of Condé Nast Traveller Italia and La Cucina Italiana, led the effort.
During COVID, she saw how strongly Italians are tied to their food culture. She took the idea to the government, and after five years of hard work, UNESCO finally accepted the proposal.
She said this recognition is historic not only for Italy but for everyone who loves Italian food around the world.
A Global First for UNESCO
This is the first time UNESCO has recognized an entire cuisine—not just a single dish.
In the past, they have honored items like:
-
Thailand’s tom yum soup
-
Peru’s ceviche tradition
-
Italian opera singing
-
Neapolitan pizza-making
The goal of UNESCO’s list is to protect important cultural traditions so they don’t disappear.
Why This Matters
Food brings people together, and Italian cooking especially creates:
-
Shared memories
-
Family traditions
-
A common cultural identity
UNESCO says Italian cuisine helps people express their history, their feelings, and their community spirit.
This recognition may also encourage more countries to highlight their own food traditions in the future.
