Gujarat is home to the world’s only Asiatic lions, and there are now almost 900 lions in the state. Unlike India’s shy tigers, these lions are social and often walk openly near Gir National Park and nearby towns. Most visitors easily spot them on safari—but I was unlucky and saw none!

I was staying at Aramness, a luxury lodge designed like a traditional Gujarati village. Each stone-and-wood cottage (called kothi) has a courtyard, a verandah, and a private plunge pool. At night, you hear lion roars from the forest, skinks scratching, and even giant snails sliding across the paths. With early dinners and calm surroundings, life here moves slowly and peacefully.

Wellness in the Wild

Aramness has recently added a stronger focus on Ayurveda, yoga, and wellness programs. Dr. Rafeek Jabbar, an expert from Kerala who has worked with top wellness retreats worldwide, now leads the programs. His approach mixes modern technology with traditional Ayurvedic healing.

Your wellness journey begins with a full-body scan that shows things like muscle mass, fat percentage, water levels, and mineral balance. Then Dr. Rafeek studies your results, checks your pulse, asks questions, and identifies your dosha—vata, pitta, or kapha. This helps him decide which treatments will suit you best.

Healing Treatments

Aramness offers a wide range of Ayurvedic therapies, including:

  • Abhyanga massage with warm herb-filled potlis

  • Shirodhara, where warm oil gently flows over your forehead

  • Ayurvedic detox treatments

  • Acupuncture, deep tissue massages, facials, aromatherapy, and sound healing

  • Morning yoga by the pool

Wellness programs last 3–5 days, but you can also book just a single relaxing massage after your safari.

Stay and Food

In winter, the cozy cottages feel especially peaceful. The food menu includes light meals, herbal teas, juices, and special diets for detox or gut health. But if you want to enjoy Gujarat’s flavors, try their Gujarati thali—a delicious mix of sweets, farsan, bajra rotla, and more.

On my last night, even though the doctor suggested low-carb meals, I happily enjoyed the full thali under the stars. It was the perfect end to a slow, peaceful, wellness-filled stay in Gir.
