People love traveling to beautiful natural places—and one experience stands out above all others.

A new survey for Icelandair asked 3,000 Americans (age 16 and up) about their top bucket-list trips for 2026. The results showed that 43% of Americans plan to finally tick off a dream destination next year.

The No.1 Dream Trip: Seeing the Northern Lights

More than 34% of people said their biggest dream trip is to see the northern lights. This magical natural light show was the top choice for almost all age groups—teens, young adults, and even people aged 55 and above.

While the northern lights can be spotted in some parts of the U.S., the best views are in places near the Arctic Circle.

Why Iceland Is a Favorite

Iceland, located just below the Arctic Circle, is one of the best places in the world to see the aurora.
The best time to visit is September to March, when nights are long and dark.
Popular viewing spots include:

  • Snaefellsnes Peninsula

  • Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
These areas have very little light pollution, making the lights shine even brighter.

Other Great Places to See the Northern Lights

Travelers also love:

  • Finland

  • Sweden

  • Canada

People book all kinds of northern lights trips—from luxury private-jet tours to cozy glass igloos or simple weekend getaways.

Right now is an especially good time to see the aurora because the sun is at its most active phase, making the lights brighter and more frequent through 2026.

Other Top Dream Trips for 2026

The survey found that Americans mostly want trips connected to natural wonders.
