Skiing is often seen as an expensive sport, but you don’t always need to spend a lot to enjoy the snow. A new report by HomeToGo has revealed the most budget-friendly ski resort in the United States — Red Lodge Mountain in Montana.
HomeToGo studied 70 ski resorts by comparing lift ticket prices, stay costs, and ski area size. Red Lodge Mountain came out on top for offering great value.
Located near Yellowstone National Park, Red Lodge Mountain is close to the charming town of Red Lodge — known for its small-town vibe, cute shops, history, and fun saloons. The resort covers 1,635 acres, offers different levels of slopes, has a 2,400-foot vertical drop, and gets around 250 inches of snow every year.
Why Red Lodge Mountain Is Affordable
-
Lift tickets: About $62
-
Median stay price per night: $80.73
-
Average daily cost per person: $142.73
This is much cheaper than the average U.S. resort cost, where rooms can be around $171 a night and lift tickets around $162. It is also part of the Indy Pass, which includes many independent ski resorts that aim to keep skiing affordable.
Red Lodge Mountain is especially popular in spring, with great ski conditions in March and April. It also has one of Montana’s largest snow-making systems, which helps ensure good skiing early in the season.
Montana performed well in the rankings, with Bridger Bowl and Whitefish Mountain Resort also in the top 10. Other affordable spots include Mount Spokane in Washington, Brundage and Schweitzer in Idaho, Purgatory and Wolf Creek in Colorado, Mount Bachelor in Oregon, and Sunrise Park in Arizona.
