If you’re looking for a fall road trip full of mountains, lakes, and colorful trees, the Cascade Loop in Washington State is a perfect choice. This 400-mile scenic route passes through charming towns, peaceful lakes, and stunning mountain passes. It’s best enjoyed over five days, with extra time for hiking or relaxing along the way.
Day 1: Everett to Leavenworth
Start your trip in Everett and drive to Leavenworth, a Bavarian-style village surrounded by mountains. Along the way, visit the Mukilteo Lighthouse, Wallace Falls State Park, and enjoy the mountain views on Stevens Pass. In Leavenworth, stroll through its alpine streets filled with breweries, shops, and riverside trails.
Day 2: Leavenworth to Mazama
Drive through the Wenatchee Valley, known as the Apple Capital of the World. Stop by Chelan for lake views or local wine. Continue toward the Methow Valley, where golden fields and hot air balloons decorate the sky. End the day in Winthrop, a fun Western-style town with wooden sidewalks and cozy restaurants.
Day 3: North Cascades National Park
This is the heart of the trip—the “American Alps.” The North Cascades Scenic Highway takes you through dramatic mountain views, turquoise lakes, and over 300 glaciers. Don’t miss Washington Pass Overlook, Ross Lake, and Diablo Lake. The golden larches here create some of the most beautiful fall scenery in the country.
Day 4: North Cascades to Anacortes
Leave the mountains behind and head to Anacortes on Fidalgo Island. Visit Cap Sante Park for stunning coastal views, enjoy fresh seafood, and explore the marina. If you have extra time, take a ferry to the San Juan Islands for whale watching.
Day 5: Anacortes to Everett
Finish your loop by crossing the famous Deception Pass Bridge, one of Washington’s most photographed spots. Drive through Whidbey Island, visit farm stands and beaches, and take a short ferry ride back to Everett—completing your unforgettable Cascade Loop adventure.
