On the last stop of a four-state stargazing road trip, I found myself at Capitol Reef National Park in Utah—and it turned out to be the highlight of my journey. Standing under the giant sandstone cliffs, I saw dozens of shooting stars, making it one of the most magical experiences of my life.

Capitol Reef is special because it’s far away from big cities and light pollution. In fact, it’s certified by Dark Sky International for its clear and protected night skies. Even the nearby town of Torrey is a Dark Sky Community, which means the stars here shine brighter than most places in the U.S.

The park is filled with cliffs, arches, and canyons, but what makes it unforgettable is the view of the Milky Way stretching across the sky. For photographers, stargazers, and dreamers, it’s a true paradise.

Best Place to Stargaze

The park roads are open all night, so you can stop almost anywhere to enjoy the night sky. A great spot is Panorama Point, just two miles from the visitor center. It’s easy to reach, perfect for sunsets, and even better when you return later at night to see the stars without any crowds.

Whether you want to watch shooting stars or capture the Milky Way, Capitol Reef offers one of the best stargazing experiences in America.
