Washington is called the Evergreen State because of its endless green forests. But in fall, something magical happens — some of those trees turn golden. This is what people call “Larch Madness.”

Larch trees are special because, unlike most evergreens, they lose their needles every fall. But before that, they shine bright yellow and orange, covering the mountainsides in golden colors. This beautiful sight attracts hikers and nature lovers from all over.

One of the most famous spots to see this is The Enchantments in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, near Leavenworth. With more than 700 alpine lakes, tall peaks, and mountain goats, this area looks like a dream. In fall, the golden larches make it even more breathtaking. But since it’s very popular, permits are required for both day hikes and overnight stays.

If you want fewer crowds, there are many other places to enjoy larches too. Try Mount Spokane, Fields Spring State Park, Lake Wenatchee, or Alta Lake. Scenic drives like Blewett Pass or the Selkirk Loop highway near Metaline Falls also offer incredible fall views.

The best time to see larches is usually from late September to late October. Whether you hike or just go for a drive, Larch Madness is one of Washington’s most stunning fall experiences.
